Christmas Pomegranate Margarita

Article

Ingredient Notes

  • Tequila: Use a good quality silver (blanco) tequila for a smooth and clean taste. If you prefer a richer flavor, you can opt for reposado tequila, which is aged longer and has hints of oak.
  • Pomegranate Juice: Look for 100% pure pomegranate juice with no added sugars to get the best flavor. You can use store-bought juice or freshly press your own if you have access to fresh pomegranates.
  • Orange Liqueur: Triple sec or Cointreau works best for this recipe, adding a subtle orange flavor that complements the tartness of the pomegranate.
  • Lime Juice: Freshly squeezed lime juice is key. It brightens the drink and balances the sweetness of the pomegranate juice.
  • Simple Syrup (optional): If you like a sweeter margarita, add a splash of simple syrup or agave nectar to taste.

Instructions

  • Prepare the Glass
  • Take a lime wedge and run it around the rim of a margarita glass to moisten it.
  • Pour coarse salt onto a small plate. Dip the rim of the glass into the salt, twisting it to coat evenly. Set the glass aside.

Mix the Margarita

  • Fill a cocktail shaker with ice.
  • Add the tequila, orange liqueur, pomegranate juice, lime juice, and simple syrup (if using).
  • Secure the lid and shake vigorously for about 15-20 seconds until well chilled.

Serve

  • Fill your salt-rimmed glass with ice.
  • Strain the margarita mixture into the prepared glass.
  • Garnish

Garnish with a lime slice on the rim and sprinkle a few fresh pomegranate seeds into the drink for a pop of color and flavor.

The Old Friend - Cocktail

Video
  • 1.5 oz  Gin
  • .75 oz Pink grapefruit juice
  • .5 oz Campari
  • .3 oz Elderflower liqueur
  • Grapefruit twist

Originally created by Jim Meehan in 2012 for Chef’s Club Aspen. I found this spec on Difford’s Guide who slightly change the spec to include 10ml of elderflower liqueur instead of the 7.5ml used in the original. The better spec being whatever one suits your tastes better.

The Palmetto - Cocktail

Palmetto

The Palmetto is another forgotten classic. First published in ‘The Savoy Cocktail Book’ back in 1930, the drink consists of dark rum, sweet vermouth, and orange bitters. In the simplest terms, it’s like a rum-base take on the classic Manhattan. Sweet, sugary, caramel-centric rum, sweet vermouth, and herbal, citrus, spicy bitter, what’s not to love?

What you’ll need to make a Palmetto

1.5 ounces of dark rum
1.5 ounces of sweet vermouth
2-3 dashes of orange bitters

The Palmetto recipe steps

1. Add ice to a mixing glass.
2. Pour in dark rum, sweet vermouth, and orange bitters.
3. Stir gently to combine.
4. Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
5. Garnish with an orange peel.

Hanky Panky Cocktail

Hanky Panky

Created by a bartender named Ada Coleman at London’s Savoy Hotel in 1903, the Hanky Panky is a take on the Martinez. While that iconic take on the classic Martini is made with gin, sweet red vermouth, maraschino liqueur, and orange bitters, the Hanky Panky is made with gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca (a bitter Italian liqueur belove by drinkers and bartenders alike).

What you’ll need to make a Hanky Panky

  • 1.5 ounces of London dry gin
  • 1.5 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 2-3 dashes of Fernet-Branca

The Hanky Panky recipe steps

1. Add ice to a mixing glass.
2. Pour in London dry gin, sweet vermouth, and Fernet-Branca.
3. Stir gently to combine.
4. Strain into a chilled cocktail or martini glass.
5. Garnish it with an orange peel.

Archangel Cocktail

Article

Ingredients

  • 2.25 oz. gin
  • 0.75 oz. Aperol
  • 2 slices of cucumber

Directions

  1. Add all ingredients to a chilled mixing glass.
  2. With a muddler or some other blunt instrument, lightly muddle the cucumbers. Bruise them, if you will. You don’t want to turn it into a pulpy mess, but rather, to free up some of their essence to be mixed with the liquid.
  3. Then add ice and stir for 15ish seconds (for small ice) or 20 to 25 seconds (for big ice).
  4. Strain into a coupe or cocktail glass, using a second fine strainer, if you need to—you want it totally clear and free from floating cucumber bits.
  5. Express the oils of a lemon peel over the top of the drink and garnish the cocktail with the peel.

Salmoncito Cocktail

The Salmoncito requires no cocktail shaker or strainer; just pour everything into a tall glass, stir together, and kick back.

  • Pour 1 oz. chilled tonic water into an ice-filled highball glass.
  • Add 1½ oz. London dry gin, ¼ oz. Campari, and ¼ oz. fresh grapefruit juice.
  • Top off with more tonic water to fill glass; stir gently.
  • Squeeze a grapefruit twist over to release oils; discard. Garnish with a grapefruit supreme or wedge.
  • Makes 1

SALMONCITO So many of the drinks we order at bars could never realistically be recreated at home. They rely on hard-to-get spirits or time-intensive prep work that only makes sense when you’re serving hundreds of the same concoction. But every once in a while there’s a transformative idea that makes it easy for you to share a bar-worthy cocktail at your next dinner party or barbecue. And the Salmoncito, a pink riff on the classic G&T, is exactly that. Khristian de la Torre—now of the acclaimed Café Tacobar in Mexico City—came up with the drink in 2013, and it quickly became one of those insider recipes that jumps from menu to menu. As soon as Epicurious printed it, the cocktail also became a go-to among staffers and readers. Fresh grapefruit juice and bitter Campari make a classic gin and tonic taste more like everything it wants to be. The ruby red liqueur emphasizes the drink’s crisp botanical side, while the citrus amplifies its thirst-quenching quality. A fresh can of well-chilled tonic is key to lively bubbles; that bottle you opened last week need not apply.

Whisky Daisy

WHISKEY DAISY If you ask me, every season is whiskey sour season, but my absolute favorite time to drink one is in the depths of winter. When the sun goes down well before cocktail o’clock, the merry chatter of ice in a shaker is an especially welcome punctuation to a long day of work. And even though people tend to associate tart, frothy drinks in the sour family with warm weather (think poolside daiquiris), they’re even more delicious when made with peak season California and Florida citrus. (And a good source of vitamin C to boot.) The Whiskey Daisy is a lovely variation on the form, one that swaps in a sweet liqueur, in this case Cointreau, for some of the simple syrup used in a traditional whiskey sour. I love the way the rich orange notes round out the brassiness of the fresh lemon. And while the combination of liqueur and simple syrup makes for a supremely balanced drink, I routinely omit the latter when I don’t have any at the ready. My lazy version is decidedly more mouth-puckering, the kind of drink that makes you raise your eyebrows. But on the coldest nights of the year, it always tastes just right. —Amiel Stanek

  1. Combine 2 oz. bourbon or rye
  2. ¾ oz. fresh lemon juice
  3. ½ oz. orange liqueur (such as Cointreau)
  4. ¼ oz. simple syrup or agave nectar in a cocktail shaker
  5. Fill with ice.
  6. Cover and shake vigorously 15 seconds.
  7. Strain with a Hawthorne strainer into a rocks glass filled with ice
  8. add a splash of club soda if desired.
  9. Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry threaded onto a skewer. Makes 1
